The fastest way to lose weight is to starve yourself and exercise constantly. You will need to drink plenty of water, or you will die of dehydration. Is this a fun or healthy way to lose weight? No it is not. Is it an effective way to lose weight? Yes it is.
On a serious note, I would like to cover some of the slower and safer ways to lose weight. There are countless diet books available. They all were published for a reason. To make money. They also must have had some merit, or they would not have been published at all. Recent advances in medicine have changed the way we think about nutrition. I hope to clear up some of the clutter for you here.
Calorie counting is the old standard. You have to first learn how many calories per day that your body is likely to burn, then eat less of them. One pound of fat equals about 3,500 calories. If your body will burn 2,500 calories per day, and you eat only 1,500, you will lose two pounds per week. This is a slow and steady technique. It is outdated and requires a lot of knowledge and math skills.
Low fat is another out out dated method. Although it is always a good idea to keep fat intake down, it is not a great weight loss tool. Counting fat grams for weight loss is similar to counting calories. You have to know how much fat is in all the foods you plan to eat, and keep track of the numbers. It may not even work for some people. If you cut fats but eat tons of carbs, you may still gain weight.
Low carbohydrate is a fast and somewhat healthy means to lose those unwanted pounds. You cannot do if forever though. Your body needs the carbs for fuel. Carbohydrates and fats are turned into glycogen in the body and used at the cellular level as energy. When you limit carbs, the body converts stored fat into glycogen and burns it as fuel. When the stored fats become hard to access or run low, the body begins to break down muscle tissue for energy. That is when is starts to affect your health adversely.
The new thinking leans towards keeping blood sugar levels moderated and eating properly balanced meals. The South Beach Diet is a great book including meal plans and recipes.
My doctor recommended Sugar Busters at one time also.
One thing is for sure, there is no fast way to lose weight long-term and stay healthy. The real secret is persistent effective effort. Pick a sound plan and stick to it. The pounds will disappear in time.
So, the fastest way to lose weight is to starve and work out until you pass out. The fastest safe way is by cutting carbs and eating sensibly, while throwing in a decent amount of exercise.
