NHS Statistics Show Over 11,000 Obese a Year Taken to Hospital as UK Obesity Crisis Worsens; Yet Weight Loss Surgery on the NHS is Limited

Shocking figures from the NHS Information Centre show 225 people being admitted to hospital each week in the UK due to obesity. However, with limited availability for weight loss surgery on the NHS, weight loss surgery providers Bodycraft are seeing an increase in demand from patients who want to lose weight.

Statistics from the NHS show that last year 11,740 patients were taken to hospital with an obesity-related condition – a figure that has trebled in the last 4 years and risen by 10% in just the last 12 months.

Nearly a quarter of UK adults are now classified as being obese and it has been predicted that over the next ten years this will rise to 40%.

Mr Marcus Reddy, a consultant bariatric surgeon for Bodycraft, said: ‘The number of referrals has gone up by ten or 20 per cent every year in the last five years.’

Mr Reddy is also a consultant surgeon at St George’s Hospital in South London and credited with developing the South Thames Bariatric Service which is the preferred provider for NHS bariatric surgery in the region.

It is estimated that the NHS spends £4.2 billion every year treating patients for obesity-related conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Mr Reddy also explained how bariatric surgery is a good investment for the NHS: ‘We know it’s cost effective. If you were an accountant you would say it is money very well spent’.

However, although surgery rates have increased, relatively few obese patients are able to be treated on the NHS. With budgets under ever-greater pressure, waiting lists are long and criteria for surgery are very tight.

Little surprise, then, that many patients who do not qualify for NHS obesity surgery are turning to the private sector for help. London-based weight loss surgery providers, Bodycraft, are seeing increasing numbers of enquiries from patients seeking obesity surgery.

Okay, I have thyroid cancer and had a total thyroidectomy. In preperation for my scans, I had to stop taking all my thyroid hormone (synthroid), so, I’m severely hypothyroid now. The last month and a half, I’ve been on a Tone Detox and exercise at least 5 days a week. Even with my Tone Detox and workout, I have not lost a single pound and in fact have gained a tiny bit.
